If you are an athlete training for competition,
- running weekend half marathons and mini triathlons
- football, basketball, baseball
- golf tournaments
- increase physical health with weights and cardio exercise
- weekend fun sports
then you may have experienced some form of injury. Unfortunately, these injuries do not happen when we are taking our "rest week", if you ever choose to take one! Athletic injuries often come in the form of traumatic and overuse injuries.
Traumatic injuries are quick and have sudden impact on an individual. An example of this is a football player tearing his ACL while he is being tackled. The injury is almost always felt immediately.
Overuse injuries can be felt suddenly or slowly increase over time with continued stress without modification. An example of an overuse injury to an athlete can be lateral knee and thigh pain while training for a half marathon. This pain will often being small, at the end of the run. Then, without proper modification, the pain will increase and also happen earlier and earlier in the run process until the knee pain is felt 100% of the time. This is NOT GOOD!
