My Back!

I was at the house and my back “went out”… “Where can I find him?”

Eighty percent of people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory tract infections. In fact, it is estimated that low back pain affects more than half the adult population each year and more than 10 % of all people experience frequent bouts of low back pain.
If you are not careful you can injure you low back. If that happens, what should you do?
1.    Low back pain can resolve in 3-5 days
2.    If you do not expect serious injury or a more serious condition, such as a heart attack, try to find a comfortable position. When laying down try side lying or face up with your knees elevated. These are usually the best positions at alleviating low back pain.
3.    Try getting up from your bed or couch by starting on your side. Then, let your legs slowly drop to the floor and at the same time push your upper body up with your arms. It is all controlled and happens at one time.
4.    Ice can be applied in the first 24 hours. If ice makes you “ache” more, then go ahead and try heat. If the heat increases pain as well, call a trained healthcare professional.
5.    Anti-inflammatory over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers such as Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin, Advil (Ibuprofen) generally show to have better results with low back pain from a injury than other OTC medications. If you do not have any health conditions limiting your intake of anti-inflammatory medications, you can try taking the dosage listed on the bottle.
6.    Rest the first 24 hours but do not stay in bed. Light, pain free movements are good for you at decreasing muscle spasm, improving range of motion and increase your overall healing rate.
7.    Once you feel better, start a core exercise program from a trained professional to help prevent the re-occurrence of low back pain.
It is important to realize that you do not have to “live with the pain”. If your condition persists longer than 3-5 days, you cannot sleep, and movement is not improving, find a provider in your area that can help you. Providers include Chiropractors, Primary Care Physicians and Physical Therapists. Getting treatment early can get you feeling better faster and decrease your chances off re-injuring your back by 90%.
